After the so-called “Conquest of the Desert,” the public land policy implemented by the national government in the Patagonian territories was decisive for the emergence of large estates and the estancia as a productive unit for sheep farming. Among all the estancias in Tierra del Fuego, we focus on the most renowned in the Province’s history, for their decisive role in the early growth of the City of Río Grande, and for the legacy of those whose history tells us about the actions of an Anglican family in Ushuaia.
Traveling along the secondary routes near the city of Río Grande brings us closer to the large estancias, which represent a historical heritage of great value. Located in the far north of the island, some of them can be visited independently, such as Estancia María Behety. Although the site does not offer tourist services, visitors are allowed to photograph the main buildings of the estancia, and during shearing season, they can also observe the work carried out with the livestock.

A wonderful 3-night program to enjoy the best of Ushuaia, the city of the end of the world
Other properties, such as Estancia Sara Braun, can be visited through guided tours organized by the Municipal Department of Tourism at different times of the year.
The so-called “small estancias” are concentrated in the ecotone, that is, in the central area of the island where the steppe gives way to the forest and the mountain range. In this area, Estancia Las Hijas welcomes visitors to its grounds, offering tours of the main house, the chance to observe rural activities, and of course, to taste the traditional Fuegian lamb roasted on a spit.
In addition to visiting the estancias, travelers can also take part in traditional events of Fuegian rural life, such as the Fiesta del Ovejero, held in March. This festival celebrates, through a competition, the work of sheepdogs in herding flocks. For those who wish to witness the skill of ranch hands and animals in rural tasks, this event is an excellent experience.
