For U.S. travelers, Ushuaia is remote rather than difficult. There are no regular nonstop flights from the United States, but the trip becomes straightforward when Buenos Aires airport logistics, Argentine payment habits and entry documentation are settled before departure.
The most important decisions are practical: book a protected air sequence when possible, check whether the connection changes airports, carry more than one payment method and understand that tipping in Argentina is customary but less standardized than in the United States.

How to Fly from the United States to Ushuaia
Plan around Buenos Aires, not only the total flight time
Most itineraries route a U.S. gateway to Buenos Aires and then continue domestically to Ushuaia (USH). International services commonly arrive at Ezeiza (EZE), while many domestic Patagonia flights use Aeroparque (AEP). Some Ushuaia flights also use EZE, so read the airport code on every sector.
An EZE–AEP change is a surface transfer across Buenos Aires. It may involve immigration, baggage collection, traffic and a second check-in. A generous connection or an overnight in Buenos Aires is often a better travel decision than a tight same-day transfer assembled from separate tickets.
| Choice | Advantage | Risk to manage |
|---|---|---|
| One ticket to USH | Better disruption protection | Airport change may still apply |
| Buenos Aires overnight | Reduces missed-connection pressure | Extra hotel and transfers |
| Separate tickets | Can expand schedule choices | Traveler carries delay and baggage risk |
USH is about 5 km from central Ushuaia. Taxis, remises and reserved transfers serve arrivals; there is no need to rent a car merely to reach downtown.

Entry Tips for U.S. Citizens
As of this review, U.S. ordinary-passport holders do not require an Argentine tourist visa for visits of up to 90 days, and the former reciprocity fee remains suspended. Carry a passport valid for the planned stay, proof of onward or return travel, lodging details and insurance information. Diplomatic, official or non-standard travel documents follow different rules.
Rules can change, so verify the Argentine visa regime and U.S. State Department country information before ticketing. If the itinerary enters Chile, embarks an Antarctic voyage or uses a charter flight, check those separate requirements as well. Cruise companies may impose passport-validity and insurance standards beyond Argentina’s minimum.
Currency and Card Strategy
Argentina’s currency is the peso (ARS). Cards are widely useful in established hotels, restaurants, shops and tour operations, but a small peso reserve is sensible for tips, taxis, cafés and terminal outages. Bring two cards from different accounts and keep them separately.
U.S. dollars may be accepted or exchanged, but they are not the everyday currency and a business may apply its own conversion. Always confirm the final amount and currency before paying. If a terminal offers an unfamiliar conversion into dollars, compare the displayed ARS total rather than approving automatically.
Eligible foreign tourists may receive Argentina’s VAT treatment on qualifying accommodation when the property issues the correct documentation and payment satisfies the rules. Ask for the final tax-inclusive total when comparing direct hotel rates with online platforms.
VisitUshuaia already maintains a detailed money, credit cards and tips guide. Use it for current local acceptance rather than relying on a fixed exchange-rate number in this country guide.
Tipping Without Applying U.S. Percentages Automatically
In restaurants, around 10% for good table service is customary and is often left in cash. Check the bill before adding anything: a cover charge is not necessarily a service gratuity. Casual counter service does not follow the same expectation as a full-service meal.
For guides and drivers, there is no single legally fixed percentage. Consider the service length, group size, complexity and quality. Ask your travel planner for a current per-person guideline when booking a private or multi-day itinerary. Small hotel tips are appreciated for luggage assistance or housekeeping but remain discretionary.

Power, Phones and Packing
Argentina uses 220V/50Hz electricity and commonly Type I and Type C sockets. Many phone and laptop chargers accept 100–240V, but U.S. heat tools may not. Check the label and bring an adapter; a plug adapter does not convert voltage.
Install an eSIM before travel only after confirming that the phone is unlocked and compatible. Central Ushuaia generally supports ordinary mobile tasks, while national parks, trails and lake routes may have intermittent service. Save confirmations and maps offline. Visit the dedicated Ushuaia mobile internet guide for setup pitfalls.
Pack layers, a waterproof windproof shell, shoes with grip, gloves, hat, sunglasses and a compact daypack. Even summer visitors should not treat a forecast high as an all-day condition.
Useful Spanish for U.S. Travelers
- Hola, tenemos una reserva. — Hello, we have a reservation.
- ¿Aceptan tarjeta? — Do you accept cards?
- ¿La propina está incluida? — Is the tip included?
- ¿A qué hora regresamos? — What time do we return?
How Many Nights?
Allow at least three nights for a first trip and four when weather-sensitive activities or long-haul recovery matter. If Ushuaia precedes Antarctica, arrive two or three nights before embarkation unless the expedition operator specifies a stronger buffer. The purpose is not to “fill time”; it is to protect a major trip from air disruption while giving Tierra del Fuego its own place in the itinerary.
