Table of Contents

Ushuaia, known as the End of the World, is the southernmost city in the world and a highlight for many South America and Antarctica cruises. Despite its remote location, the city offers a mix of stunning natural beauty, unique wildlife, and cultural experiences — all within easy reach of the cruise port. If your ship stops here, even for just a few hours, you can make the most of your time with a bit of planning.

In this article, we will try to answer most of the questions that many cruisers ask when planning a stop in Ushuaia.

1-night Pre-Cruise Package in Ushuaia

Visit the most important interest points in the Southermost City in the World!

1-night Pre-Cruise Package in Ushuaia

1 – Port & docking info. Does the cruise ship dock near Ushuaia city?

Yes, cruise ships dock very close to Ushuaia city. The pier is located right in the center of town, only a 5–10 minute walk from San Martín Avenue, the main street with shops, cafés, and restaurants. This makes it one of the most convenient ports in South America, as you can easily explore the city on foot or meet local tour operators directly outside the terminal without needing a shuttle.

So, note that:

  • Cruise ships dock at the main pier, right next to downtown.

  • It’s just a 5–10 minute walk to San Martín Avenue, the main street with shops and restaurants.

  • Taxis are available at the port, and we meet passengers directly outside the terminal.

2 – Can we walk into Ushuaia town easily from the port?

Yes, you can easily walk from the port into Ushuaia town. The cruise pier is located right in the heart of the city, just a few minutes’ walk from San Martín Avenue, the main street with shops, cafés, and restaurants. This makes it very convenient for passengers to explore downtown without needing extra transportation and to access local services and tours right away.

3 – Is it necessary to take a taxi to go to the city centre in Ushuaia?

No, it is not necessary to take a taxi to reach the city centre in Ushuaia. The cruise ship pier is located just steps away from downtown, making it one of the most accessible ports in South America. From the port entrance, you can walk to San Martín Avenue, the city’s main street, in less than ten minutes. Along the way, you’ll find cafés, shops, restaurants, and banks, all within easy reach. Most cruisers enjoy walking because it allows them to get a feel for the town immediately and take photos of the harbor and the famous “Ushuaia – End of the World” sign. Taxis are available at the port, but they are not necessary unless you plan to visit attractions outside the city, such as Tierra del Fuego National Park or Martial Glacier. Walking is safe, straightforward, and very convenient, even in cold weather, as everything is close by. For this reason, unless you have mobility issues or limited time, there’s no real need to use a taxi just to go downtown.

4- Are taxis available at the dock?

Yes, taxis are available right at the dock in Ushuaia. When cruise ships arrive, you’ll usually find a line of taxis waiting just outside the port gate. They can take you to nearby attractions like Tierra del Fuego National Park, Martial Glacier, or simply around town. However, during peak cruise days, demand can be high, so some travelers prefer to pre-book a tour or driver to avoid waiting. For short trips within the city, taxis are convenient and inexpensive, but if you want a longer excursion, arranging in advance is often the better option.

Anyway, we suggest booking your transfers with our company to avoid delays and problems upon arrival. During the cruise season, vehicles are very limited, and this can lead to a loss of valuable time.

5 – Is hiring a cab the least expensive say to see the area off the ship?

Hiring a cab can be one of the less expensive ways to explore the area off the ship, but it depends on what you want to see and how much time you have. For short rides within Ushuaia or a simple transfer to nearby spots, taxis are convenient and reasonably priced. However, if you plan to visit places like Tierra del Fuego National Park, Martillo Island, or take a scenic drive along the coast, costs can add up quickly since fares are charged by distance and waiting time. In many cases, booking a shared tour with a local operator may actually be more cost-effective and provide additional value, as it often includes a guide, transportation, and entrance logistics. So while taxis are fine for short trips, organized excursions are usually the better option for a fuller experience beyond the city.

We strongly recommend booking an activity with us, using a private guide and vehicle, to avoid problems and delays.

6 – Are excursions offered throught the cruise line or is it better to go independent?

Both options are available in Ushuaia, and each has its advantages. Excursions offered through the cruise line are convenient and guarantee that the ship will wait if there are delays, which gives passengers peace of mind. However, they are usually more expensive and sometimes less flexible. Independent tours, on the other hand, are often cheaper, operated with smaller groups with a more personalized experience. We meet passengers right outside the port, making it easy to join without much hassle. For those seeking better value and a more authentic touch, going with a professional incoming tour operator is the best option.

7 – Can I exchange money on arrival?

There is no official money exchange office right at the pier in Ushuaia. However, the city center is only a short walk from the port, and along San Martín Avenue you will find banks, ATMs, and exchange houses (“casa de cambio”) where you can exchange money. Some souvenir shops and restaurants also accept U.S. dollars or euros, though usually at less favorable rates. Since ATMs in Argentina often have high fees and low withdrawal limits, many travelers recommend bringing some cash in USD to exchange locally. If you only need small amounts for taxis or tips, it’s best to have pesos ready before arriving, or plan a quick stop in town after disembarking.

8 – Can I pay in US Dollars or Euros?

In Ushuaia, some shops, restaurants, and tour operators will accept U.S. dollars or euros, but it’s not guaranteed everywhere. When they do, the exchange rate they use is often less favorable than the official or market rate, so you may end up paying more. Larger businesses that cater to tourists are more likely to take foreign currency, while smaller shops, taxis, and local cafés generally prefer Argentine pesos. For convenience and better value, it’s best to carry pesos for day-to-day spending, and use dollars or euros only as a backup.

money visituhsuaia

9 – What about credit cards? Are the cards widely accepted?

Yes, credit cards are widely accepted in Ushuaia, especially in hotels, larger restaurants, souvenir shops, and tour agencies. Visa and Mastercard are the most commonly used, while American Express is accepted in fewer places. However, it’s important to know that smaller cafés, local markets, taxis, and even some excursion providers may be cash only. In addition, some businesses apply a minimum purchase for card payments, or may charge a small fee. Because of this, most travelers carry a mix of payment methods: use your credit card for bigger expenses, but keep some Argentine pesos in cash for small purchases, tips, and transportation.

10 – What to do in Ushuaia in a single day?

Ushuaia, often called “The End of the World”, is the southernmost city on the planet and a gateway to incredible landscapes.
Even if you only have one day here, you can still experience a great mix of nature, history, and culture.

In the morning, many travelers choose to sail along the Beagle Channel. This short cruise takes you past small islands filled with sea lions and seabirds.
You will also see the iconic Les Éclaireurs Lighthouse, standing proud against the cold waters. The views of the mountains and glaciers from the boat are unforgettable.

By midday, you can head to Tierra del Fuego National Park, just a short drive from the city. Here you’ll find easy hiking trails through forests, lakes, and coastal paths.
A special highlight is the End of the World Train, a historic ride that recalls the times of the old prison. Don’t miss the chance to visit the Post Office at the End of the World and get a unique stamp in your passport.

In the late afternoon, return to the city for a stroll along San Martín Avenue. This main street is full of souvenir shops, chocolate stores, and cozy cafés.
You can also explore the Maritime and Prison Museum, located in the former jail of Ushuaia. Walking by the waterfront, be sure to take a photo at the famous “Ushuaia – End of the World” sign.

To end the day, enjoy a delicious dinner of Patagonian lamb or the famous king crab (centolla). Local restaurants specialize in fresh seafood and warm hospitality.
Even in a single day, Ushuaia offers travelers a true taste of Patagonia. It is a place where mountains meet the sea, and every corner feels like an adventure.
Your one-day visit will leave you with memories of a lifetime, and perhaps the desire to return for more.

Many times, the length of a cruise stop in Ushuaia is limited, so many visitors choose to visit Tierra del Fuego National Park and take the End of the World Train only, skipping the Beagle Channel navigation, and then complete their visit with a walk through the city center, perhaps visiting the Prison Museum and tasting the typical king crab or Patagonian lamb cooked over the fire. I think this is a great option.

11- Can I visit the Tierra del Fuego National Park from the pier? how?

Yes, you can easily visit Tierra del Fuego National Park directly from the pier in Ushuaia. The park entrance is only about 12 km (7–8 miles) from the port, and getting there is simple. Many passengers take a taxi or join a shuttle bus service that departs right outside the cruise terminal, but it can be a problem during high season when many cruises docks in the southernmost city in the world. So, the best option is to book a guided excursion in advance, which often includes transportation, entrance tickets, and a stop at the End of the World Train. For those who prefer independence, renting a car is also possible, though most visitors find taxis or organized tours more convenient, but again could be a problem during cruise season. Travel time from the pier to the park entrance is usually 20–30 minutes, making it a very manageable half-day activity during a cruise stop.

12 – How much time do you needfor the natioanl park? It´s enough if we´re in port from 12 to 8 pm?

Yes, it’s definitely enough. You’ll have 8 hours total in port, and a half-day excursion (4–5 hours) fits comfortably. But we strongly suggest to book a private tour in advance. You can book with us a guide and vehicle, in private or sharing the service with other couples or small groups.

That leaves you with time to:

    • Do a 4–5 hour National Park tour,

    • Return to town, and still enjoy a walk through Ushuaia or a king crab dinner before boarding.

13- Do you meet passengers right off the ship for these tours in Ushuaia?

Yes, correct. A guide will be waiting for you with a sign with your name to start the activity immediately. Do not lose time finding a taxi, during cruise season it could be challenging.

14- Do you recommend taking the Train of the End of the World from the pier?

Yes, absolutely. It’s a unique tourist experience and highly recommended — both for its historical value and its connection with nature.

The southernmost operating railway: Originally built in the early 20th century to supply the Ushuaia prison, it was reactivated in 1994 as a heritage train connecting with Tierra del Fuego National Park. (Wikipedia)

Replica steam locomotives (like “Camila”) and enchanting scenery: The ride includes crossing the Toro Gorge, the Pipo River, and a stop at La Macarena waterfall, with forest landscapes, snowy peaks, and stories of local history.

Multilingual audio guide and scenic stops: In the Premium or Superior class, the audio system narrates stories in up to seven languages, guiding you through natural and historical sites—ideal for enjoying and learning.

Logistics from the pier (port):

  • If you go on your own, a popular option is to take a taxi from the port to the train station in Ushuaia. But we suggest to book with us a private tour including the tickets booked in adavance. During high season, it´s very important!

16- Do you offer private tours available that are shared with other couples?

Absolutely! If you’re wondering whether there are “private” tours in Ushuaia that are shared with other couples or small groups, the answer is: yes—these options do exist, offering a middle ground between fully private experiences and large group tours.

What Are “Private Shared” Tours?

These are small-group or semi-private tours where you enjoy a more intimate and personalized experience alongside a few other travelers (often couples), rather than being bundled with a large tour group. It’s a great balance between exclusivity, flexibility, and cost-efficiency.

Available “Private Shared” Options in Ushuaia

  • Shared Small-Group Shore Excursion (Tierra del Fuego National Park). For instance, a 5.5-hour National Park + Hiking shore excursion

  • Small-Group Hiking & Canoe Tour. Another option labeled as “exclusive,” but limited to about 12 people, allowing for more personalized attention while still being shared

17- Is it possible to see penguins in Ushuaia during a short stop in Ushuaia?

Yes — it is possible to see penguins during a short cruise stop in Ushuaia, but it depends on timing, tour type, and your hours in port.

Time Considerations for Cruise Passengers to see penguins

  • Full penguin-walk tour (boat + Harberton + guided island walk):

    • Takes around 6–7 hours total.

    • Works only if your cruise stop is at least a full day (8+ hours).

  • Penguin-viewing by boat (no landing):

    • Takes about 4–5 hours.

    • This is usually the best choice if you only have a short afternoon stop (e.g., 12:00–20:00).

  • Very short stops (3–4 hours):

    • It may be too tight for penguins, but you could still do a quick Beagle Channel navigation to see sea lions, cormorants, and possibly distant penguins.

18- Is there Wi-Fi available in town or near the port?

Yes — you’ll have no trouble finding Wi-Fi in Ushuaia, both near the cruise port and around town.

Wi-Fi Options Near the Port

  • Cruise Terminal: Some ships dock at the main port terminal, which has a basic waiting area. Occasionally there’s free Wi-Fi, but it can be slow when many passengers connect.

  • Cafés & Restaurants Across the Street: Right outside the pier, along Maipú Avenue, you’ll find cafés, bars, and restaurants that offer free Wi-Fi with a purchase (coffee, snack, etc.). Many cruise passengers head straight there.

  • Tour Operator Booths: Some excursion kiosks and agencies at the port area offer free Wi-Fi for clients.

Around Town

  • Most cafés, bakeries, and restaurants in downtown Ushuaia (just a 10–15 min walk from the port) have free Wi-Fi.

  • Chains like Havanna Café or popular stops such as Ramos Generales are well-known among cruisers for good internet.

  • Hotels and hostels in the city center also often allow non-guests to use their Wi-Fi if you stop by for a coffee or meal.

20 – What souvenirs should I buy in Ushuaia?

Ushuaia has some really fun and unique souvenirs — many tied to its “End of the World” identity, Patagonian culture, and Antarctic gateway status. Here are the best souvenirs to look for as a cruise passenger:

Popular Souvenirs in Ushuaia

  1. End of the World Postmark & Passport Stamp

    • At the post office in Tierra del Fuego National Park or kiosks in town you can get a special “Fin del Mundo” stamp in your passport (just for fun, not official).

    • Postcards mailed from here also get the “End of the World” cancellation mark.

  2. Penguin & Antarctic-themed Items

    • Plush penguins, keychains, magnets, mugs, and T-shirts are everywhere — perfect reminders of Ushuaia as the Antarctic cruise hub.

  3. Mate Sets

    • Traditional Argentine gourds, bombillas (metal straws), and yerba mate.

    • Many shops sell decorated leather or wooden mates as souvenirs.

  4. Patagonian Wool & Knits

    • Sweaters, scarves, and gloves made from sheep or alpaca wool.

    • Warm, practical, and a nice way to take Patagonia home with you.

  5. Fuegian Liquors & Beers

    • Calafate liqueur (made from a Patagonian berry, with a legend: if you eat calafate, you’ll return to Patagonia!).

    • Local craft beers are also popular.

  6. Leather Goods

    • Argentina is famous for quality leather, and Ushuaia shops sell belts, wallets, and bags at good prices.

  7. Wood Carvings & Handicrafts

    • Local artisans craft souvenirs from lenga wood and other native materials. Look for penguins, condors, and Fuegian motifs.

  8. Nautical Memorabilia

    • Items themed around Ushuaia’s maritime and prison history: replica compasses, model ships, or “End of the World Prison” souvenirs.

  9. End of the World Apparel

    • Jackets, fleece pullovers, and T-shirts printed with “Ushuaia – Fin del Mundo” are very popular among cruisers.

  10. Posters & Photography

  • Striking landscape photos and posters of the Beagle Channel, penguins, and Tierra del Fuego can be found in art shops.

Where to Buy Souvenirs in Ushuaia?

  • San Martín Street (main shopping street downtown) has the largest selection.

  • Artisan markets near the pier feature locally made handicrafts.

  • For specialty foods/drinks: look for shops selling chocolates, jams, and calafate liqueur.

21 – Is the Beagle Channel worth doing if I arrived on a cruise?

Great question — since your cruise ship already sails the Beagle Channel, it’s natural to wonder if a separate excursion is worth it. The short answer is: Yes, it’s worth it — because the experience on a small tour boat is very different from what you see aboard a large cruise ship.

Cruise Ship vs. Excursion Boat Experience

From the Cruise Ship

  • You’ll sail through the Beagle Channel but farther from the shoreline.

  • Views are panoramic, but you’ll miss the close-up wildlife encounters.

  • Limited narration: unless your cruise line offers onboard naturalists, you won’t get the detailed stories of the islands and their history.

From a Small Catamaran or Yacht

  • Boats depart right from the pier — very convenient for cruise passengers.

  • Duration: 2.5–4 hours (perfect for a half-day port call).

  • You’ll sail much closer to the islands, seeing:

    • Sea lion colonies at Isla de los Lobos,

    • Cormorants and seabirds at Isla de los Pájaros,

    • The iconic Les Éclaireurs Lighthouse (often called the “Lighthouse at the End of the World”),

    • In season, penguins on Isla Martillo (from the boat).

  • Many tours include a knowledgeable local guide, giving history, nature facts, and photo opportunities you don’t get from a cruise balcony.

Fit with a Cruise Stop

  • Short Beagle Channel tours are cruise-timed: departures are often scheduled around ship arrivals.

  • With 3–4 hours available, it’s an excellent choice, and you’ll still have time for a walk in town or a king crab lunch.

22 – Is it worth spending some nights in Ushuaia before or after my cruise?

Yes — spending a few nights in Ushuaia either before or after your cruise is definitely worth it, especially if you enjoy nature, history, or food. The cruise stop gives you just a glimpse, but with extra days you can really experience the “End of the World.”

Why Stay in Ushuaia Longer?

1. Unique Excursions You Can’t Do in a Few Hours

  • Martillo Island Penguin Walk  (full day): only way to actually walk among Magellanic and Gentoo penguins — requires ~6–7 hours.

  • Lakes Fagnano & Escondido Tour: 4×4 adventure or scenic drives through the Andes and forests.

  • Trekking in Tierra del Fuego National Park: longer trails (4–5 hrs) that aren’t possible on a cruise stop.

2. Scenic & Cultural Experiences

  • Ride the End of the World Train at leisure (without rushing back to port).

  • Visit the Maritime Museum & former Prison — a fascinating dive into Ushuaia’s penal colony history.

  • Enjoy the view from the Arakur Hotel (great spot for a drink with panoramic vistas).

3. Gateway to Antarctica

  • Many travelers add days because Ushuaia is the Antarctic cruise departure point. The city has a vibrant atmosphere with explorers, scientists, and adventurers passing through.

4. Food & Relaxation

  • Savor Fuegian lamb and fresh king crab dinners unrushed.

  • Try local craft beers or calafate liqueur.

  • Explore chocolate shops and cozy cafés in town.

Yes, we do provide transfers from the cruise pier to Ushuaia Airport. In addition, you can certainly combine your transfer with a short tour before your flight.

A popular option is a half-day visit to Tierra del Fuego National Park, including stops at Ensenada Bay, Lapataia Bay (the end of the Pan-American Highway), and Roca Lake. This excursion takes about 3–4 hours and ends directly at the airport in time for your departure.
