The route of the End of the World
The final section of National Route No. 3 crosses the island of Tierra del Fuego from north to south. Along the way, travelers pass through landscapes of steppe, forests, lakes, and mountains, until reaching kilometer 3079 at Bahía Lapataia.
To enter Tierra del Fuego by car, it is necessary to cross the Strait of Magellan. From Río Gallegos, drive 68 kilometers along National Route No. 3 to the “Integración Austral” border crossing at Monte Aymond, Chile.
Río Grande is the first town where travelers can stop and rest after crossing the border. Located by the sea, the southern birdlife thrives along its coasts, protected by the world’s southernmost Ramsar site. A stroll along the city’s waterfront invites birdwatching and a moment of relaxation before continuing the journey.
2-night Soft Adventure in Ushuaia
Enjoy some great adventure activities in Ushuaia!
On the outskirts, visitors can explore the Salesian Mission, a historic site linked to Río Grande’s development, Cabo San Pablo, site of the Desdémona shipwreck, and Cabo Domingo, home to an old operational lighthouse. Steppe and sea landscapes invite travelers to contemplate the vast natural beauty.
Another northern attraction is well known among fishing enthusiasts. The Río Grande is synonymous with excellent trout and internationally renowned fishing lodges. Every year, professional and amateur anglers from around the world come to fish in Tierra del Fuego’s rivers and lakes, taking advantage of the region’s long summer days, with up to 18 hours of daylight.
Continuing south along Route 3, the flat plains fade, giving way to gentle hills. The ochre tones of the steppe transition into green forests, and upon reaching Tolhuin, in the ecotone, the majestic Lago Fagnano opens up, surrounded by lenga forests and mountains. Here visitors can enjoy hiking, horseback riding, camping, and fishing, and finish the day savoring a dish of lamb or trout.
This stunning environment prepares travelers for the next stretch. The road skirts Lago Fagnano for several kilometers, until the forest closes in and mountain silhouettes grow larger. As the route becomes more winding, it signals the approach to the mountain pass known as Paso Garibaldi. At the highest point, a viewpoint offers a postcard-worthy view of Lago Escondido nestled among the mountains. This area is also popular for off-road excursions and kayaking.

From Lago Escondido to Ushuaia, there are about 59 kilometers. The End of the World’s nature unfolds, revealing mountains and deep valleys that invite exploration on foot along rugged trails or skiing in winter, when snow transforms the landscape into a white blanket. In addition to skiing, visitors can enjoy snowshoe hikes, snowmobile rides, or dog sled tours. Valle de Tierra Mayor, just 20 kilometers from Ushuaia, is home to the main winter centers, where excellent cuisine by the fire can also be enjoyed.
At kilometer 3017, in the area known as Rancho Hambre, the Complementary Route “J” intersects, leading to Puerto Almanza. This fishing village is ideal for tasting fresh fish and seafood. Visitors can also hike, birdwatch, or simply enjoy the coast and sea air.
Continuing along Route 3, travelers finally reach Ushuaia, where the mountains meet the sea. The legendary Beagle Channel stretches in front of the city, its stories of explorers and shipwrecks carried by the icy wind that has blown on the Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse for over 100 years. Sailing among its solitary islets and taking a photo with the famous red-and-white lighthouse is a favorite activity for visitors. However, Ushuaia offers much more, combining adventure and nature with top-quality services.
Although Ushuaia is the last town in the province, Route 3 does not end there. To reach the final point, drive west into Tierra del Fuego National Park and continue to Bahía Lapataia. Here, a wooden sign with yellow letters marks the end of the road — nestled between the Andes and the sea.
