Penguin Tour from Ushuaia City vs Puerto Almanza: Which Route Is Better?

puerto almanza

Table of Contents

A penguin tour that sails directly from Ushuaia and one that travels by road to Puerto Almanza can both reach Martillo Island, but the journeys are fundamentally different. The direct route is better for travelers who want the broader Beagle Channel experience, including its islands, sea lions and Les Éclaireurs Lighthouse. The Puerto Almanza route is usually better for travelers who want less time on the water, a smaller-scale coastal outing and a shorter total excursion.

The decision should not be based only on where you expect to stand closest to a penguin. Departure point, vessel type, time aboard, road travel, onboard facilities and the rest of your Ushuaia itinerary all change the quality of the day.

The short answer: choose the journey, not just the destination

Choose the direct navigation from Ushuaia’s tourist port if this is your first trip and you want the classic marine route as well as Martillo Island.

The current Beagle Channel navigation to the penguin rookery takes approximately six hours and remains entirely boat-based.

Choose the Puerto Almanza route if you prefer to cover most of the distance by road and use a smaller boat for the final wildlife section.

The current half-day tour to Martillo Island from Puerto Almanza lasts approximately four and a half hours in total, including around one and a half hours of navigation.

Neither description automatically means that passengers may land on Martillo Island. Most direct city cruises and Puerto Almanza viewing tours observe the colony from the vessel. A guided island walk is a different product with specific authorization and logistics.

What the route from Ushuaia city is really like

The direct route begins at the tourist port in downtown Ushuaia. After check-in, the vessel leaves Ushuaia Bay and sails east through the Beagle Channel. The voyage itself is a major part of the excursion rather than transportation that must be endured before reaching the penguins.

The current itinerary includes the Bridges Archipelago, seabird colonies, South American sea lions, Les Éclaireurs Lighthouse and a long section of the channel before approaching Martillo Island. Passengers observe the penguins from the boat and then sail back to Ushuaia.

Why the direct route can be the better first-time experience

  • It covers the signature Beagle Channel landmarks. You do not need to reserve a second classic cruise simply to see the lighthouse and the marine colonies.
  • It starts and finishes downtown. Travelers staying near the port can normally reach check-in on foot, although they must still arrive at the time shown on the voucher.
  • The larger vessel may offer more shelter. Catamarans commonly provide indoor seating and restrooms, but these facilities must be checked for the vessel assigned to the departure.
  • The scenery develops as a continuous maritime journey. Ushuaia’s waterfront, mountains, islands, lighthouse and wildlife form one coherent route.

The main disadvantage: several hours on the water

The current VisitUshuaia listing shows departures from 9:00 AM to approximately 3:00 PM and from 3:00 PM to approximately 9:00 PM, operating from November 1 through March 31. That means roughly six hours aboard, subject to conditions and operational changes.

This can feel long for travelers prone to motion sickness, families whose children need frequent changes of activity, or visitors who primarily want the shortest possible route to the colony. The return time of the afternoon departure also needs careful attention: a 9:00 PM finish can be perfectly practical during the long summer days but may conflict with dinner reservations, family routines or an early departure the following morning.

What the route through Puerto Almanza is really like

Puerto Almanza lies east of Ushuaia along National Route 3 and the scenic Route J corridor. On the organized half-day excursion, passengers are collected in Ushuaia, travel by road through valleys and Fuegian forest, and then board a smaller boat near the coast. Reaching Puerto Almanza does not necessarily require renting a car or driving independently.

The official local tourism description places the navigation component at approximately one and a half hours, while the complete excursion takes about four and a half hours. VisitUshuaia’s current schedule lists morning and afternoon operations, approximately 8:00 AM–12:30 PM and 2:00 PM–6:30 PM.

Why the Puerto Almanza route may be the smarter choice

  • It substantially reduces boat time. This is often the decisive advantage for travelers who enjoy wildlife but do not want a five- or six-hour navigation.
  • It divides the excursion into land and sea sections. The change of setting can suit families and travelers who become restless on a long cruise.
  • It explores a different part of Tierra del Fuego. The road journey introduces the valleys, forest and eastern coast rather than repeating the city-port panorama.
  • The vessel generally carries a smaller group. A small boat can create a more immediate sense of place, although wildlife distance and behavior remain controlled by conditions and responsible operating practice.
  • Hotel transportation is included in the current listing. This simplifies logistics for travelers staying outside downtown.

The tradeoffs of the Puerto Almanza route

Less navigation does not mean less travel. Much of the outing is spent in a vehicle, and anyone susceptible to car sickness should include the road section in the decision. The smaller boat can also feel more exposed to wind, spray and movement than a large catamaran. Shorter time on the water is not a guarantee of a smoother ride.

The route also does not normally reproduce the complete classic cruise from Ushuaia. If Les Éclaireurs Lighthouse, the Bridges Archipelago and the traditional sea lion colonies are priorities, confirm whether they appear in the exact itinerary. In most cases, travelers choosing Puerto Almanza for the penguins would need a separate classic navigation to cover those landmarks.

Departure point does not determine whether you can walk with penguins

This is the most important misconception to correct. A tour can depart from Ushuaia and travel partly by road. A Puerto Almanza boat can approach Martillo without allowing passengers to disembark. Conversely, an authorized walking itinerary normally travels overland toward the Harberton area and uses a short transfer boat before a controlled guided visit on the island.

If landing is non-negotiable, do not book from the words “Martillo Island,” “penguin colony” or “Puerto Almanza” alone. Read Martillo Island Penguin Tours Compared and obtain written confirmation that the product includes an authorized landing specifically on Martillo Island.

Which route is better if you are worried about seasickness?

The Puerto Almanza route usually minimizes total time exposed to boat movement, which is useful for many motion-sensitive travelers. However, its small vessel may react more noticeably to short waves. The direct city route involves much more time afloat but may use a larger boat with indoor central seating.

There is therefore no honest universal answer based on departure point alone. Ask which vessel will operate, whether indoor seating is available and how boarding works. Choose a seat near the vessel’s center when permitted, look toward the horizon and avoid spending long periods reading or looking down at a phone. Anyone with a significant history of motion sickness should seek individualized medical advice before travel.

Morning is not automatically calm and afternoon is not automatically rough. Local wind can change in either direction. The guide Morning vs Afternoon Beagle Channel Cruise explains why schedule, forecast and itinerary matter more than a simple rule about the hour.

Which route works better for cruise passengers?

Direct navigation has an obvious geographical advantage: the tourist pier is beside Ushuaia’s cruise-port area. That does not make every departure safe for every port call. A six-hour sailing, advance check-in and the ship’s all-aboard time must all fit with a substantial margin.

The Puerto Almanza excursion is shorter in the current listing, but it depends on a long road return. Traffic, weather and operational delays occur far from the ship. Cruise passengers should never self-assemble this connection from advertised durations. The provider should confirm in writing that the specific departure is compatible with the vessel’s port schedule.

Which route works better around flights and other tours?

Neither route should be scheduled tightly after an arriving flight. A delay can consume the check-in margin, and a wildlife excursion will not wait for a late aircraft. The same principle applies before departure: avoid moving directly from Martillo Island to the airport without a generous buffer.

The Puerto Almanza route normally preserves more of the day, while the direct route occupies a full six-hour block. If you want to combine activities, compare actual meeting and return locations—not only headline duration. A morning Puerto Almanza outing can leave the afternoon free, while the direct city navigation may be the day’s only major activity.

My professional recommendation

After more than 25 years helping visitors plan trips in Argentina, I would not choose between these routes by asking which one “gets closer.” I start with the traveler’s most limited resource: time, tolerance for boat movement, tolerance for road travel, or the need to see the classic Beagle Channel landmarks.

For a first visit with only one opportunity to explore the channel, I generally favor the direct navigation from Ushuaia because the lighthouse, marine colonies and long channel landscape are integral parts of the experience. For a repeat visitor, a family that wants less continuous boat time, or someone focused primarily on Martillo Island, the Puerto Almanza route often makes better practical sense.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Puerto Almanza penguin tour shorter than sailing from Ushuaia?

In the current VisitUshuaia listings, yes. The Puerto Almanza excursion is approximately four and a half hours in total, with around one and a half hours on the water. The direct city-to-Martillo navigation is approximately six hours aboard. Schedules can change, so verify the figures for the travel date.

Does the Puerto Almanza tour include a Martillo Island landing?

Not automatically. Many Puerto Almanza tours observe the penguins from the boat. Only reserve a landing if the product explicitly confirms an authorized guided walk on Martillo Island.

Does the direct Ushuaia route visit Les Éclaireurs Lighthouse?

The current direct Martillo navigation includes the lighthouse, sea lion and seabird areas before reaching the penguin colony. Confirm the live itinerary because routes may change for operational or weather reasons.

Do I need to drive to Puerto Almanza?

No, not when booking an organized excursion that includes round-trip transportation from Ushuaia. Independent travelers may be able to reserve only the boat segment, but availability, road conditions, parking and the meeting time must be confirmed in advance.

Which route gives better penguin views?

Neither route can guarantee a particular distance, number of animals or behavior. Puerto Almanza tours may use a smaller vessel and the direct route may offer an elevated deck, but the captain positions the boat according to conditions and wildlife-observation rules.

Final choice

Book from Ushuaia city when you want Martillo Island as the climax of a complete Beagle Channel cruise. Book through Puerto Almanza when you want less boat time, a mixed road-and-sea journey and a shorter overall excursion.

If you tell VisitUshuaia how many hours you have, whether you become seasick and whether the lighthouse or an island landing is essential, the team can match you with the correct current route instead of relying on a product name that may hide important logistical differences.
