Martial Glacier Hike: Routes, Chairlift Area and Panoramic Views

martial glacier hike

Table of Contents

Choose the route by effort, not by the word “glacier.” From the Martial base at about 315 meters, the easiest objective is the upper panoramic platform at 515 meters. The Del Filo route is a moderate 5-kilometer round trip with wider views. The full glacier-viewpoint route is approximately 6 kilometers, takes about four hours and is officially rated high difficulty. A chairlift can shorten the scenic experience when operating, but it does not deliver hikers onto the glacier.

The Louis Martial Protected Natural Area is only about seven kilometers northwest of central Ushuaia. Its proximity makes it look like an uncomplicated city attraction, yet the route climbs rapidly from forest to exposed mountain terrain. The reward is one of the clearest panoramas over Ushuaia, the Beagle Channel and the islands and mountains beyond it.

This guide separates the public hiking routes from the current panoramic chairlift tour. That distinction matters: a low-difficulty scenic excursion and a high-difficulty mountain hike may begin in the same area, but they are not the same activity.

Where does the Martial hike start?

The normal starting point is the Cerro Martial base area, at approximately 315 meters above sea level. It is reached by road from Ushuaia; local tourism information recommends taxis or remises. Walking from downtown adds road distance and fatigue without improving the mountain section, so most visitors arrange a vehicle.

From the base, walkers can ascend the main ski-run corridor or use the longer forest variant that follows the Buena Esperanza stream. Both lead toward the upper panoramic platform at roughly 515 meters.

Route 1: Base to the upper panoramic platform

  • Main corridor: approximately 1.3 km one way
  • Forest variant: approximately 1.5 km one way
  • Typical ascent: about 40 minutes, depending on pace and conditions
  • Elevation: from about 315 m to 515 m

This is the best objective for travelers with limited time who still want a physical walk and a broad view. The main corridor is more direct and exposed; the forest route is slightly longer and more sheltered. Confirm current signage on site, because snow, maintenance or erosion can alter the preferred line.

Reaching the platform is not the same as reaching the glacier. It is a logical turnaround point for a short visit and the starting area for higher trails.

Route 2: Del Filo Trail for the broadest moderate panorama

The official Del Filo trail is a 5-kilometer round trip taking approximately three hours and graded moderate. From the upper platform, it heads east across stony high terrain toward about 610 meters. It offers views of Martial Glacier, Ushuaia, the Beagle Channel and Hoste and Navarino islands.

Choose Del Filo if your priority is the panorama rather than standing as close as possible to glacier terrain. It is longer than a platform visit but avoids committing to the full high-difficulty glacier-viewpoint route.

Route 3: Martial Glacier viewpoint

The official high route covers approximately 6 kilometers round trip and allows about four hours. From the upper platform, the path continues another roughly 1.6 kilometers toward the glacier sector. It is classified high difficulty because of steep, exposed mountain terrain and the consequences of ice, snow, wind or poor visibility.

The objective is a viewpoint and high-mountain environment—not an independent walk on glacial ice. Martial Glacier itself lies much higher, roughly between 1,040 and 1,200 meters. Do not cross closure signs, enter unstable snowfields or approach ice without an authorized guide and the equipment required for that specific route.

Practical rule: if your plan depends on the chairlift, a cloud-free view or a snow-free path, reconfirm on the day. Mountain visibility and operating status can change after you leave your hotel.

What is the Martial chairlift area?

The current Panoramic Martial Mountain Tour includes a panoramic chairlift ticket, city photo stops, free time around viewpoints, a snack and hotel return. It is listed as a four-hour, low-difficulty experience from approximately 2:30 to 6:30 p.m.

That product is designed for scenic access, not for completing the high route. Treat the chairlift as one component of the base-and-platform area. Before booking independently, ask:

  • whether the chairlift is operating on your date and in the forecast conditions;
  • where it boards and ends;
  • whether the ticket is one way or round trip;
  • which walking routes remain after the ride; and
  • what happens if wind or maintenance suspends service.

A social-media caption that says “take the chairlift to Martial Glacier” is misleading. The lift can reduce ascent in the visitor area; it does not replace the mountain route or authorize glacier access.

How difficult is the Martial Glacier hike?

There is no single difficulty because “Martial Glacier” describes an area with several objectives:

  • Panoramic tour or short platform visit: low effort when chairlift and transfers operate; a steady uphill walk when done entirely on foot.
  • Del Filo: moderate, with several hours on exposed terrain.
  • Glacier-viewpoint route: high difficulty and appropriate only for fit hikers with mountain conditions and time under control.

The same route becomes harder in wind, low cloud, snow or ice. Turn around before visibility or footing deteriorates; the view will not improve because you climbed farther into cloud.

Best time and conditions

Late spring through early autumn

Snow-free summer conditions generally provide the simplest hiking, longer daylight and clearer route-finding. Even then, bring warm and waterproof layers. High wind can make the exposed sections unsafe or unpleasant.

Autumn and winter

Official trail advice warns of below-freezing temperatures, shorter daylight, ice and snow. Use condition-specific traction, do not improvise on avalanche-affected slopes and hire a guide for the high route. A winter visit to the scenic base area may still be suitable when the mountain hike is not.

For general cold-season context, use VisitUshuaia’s winter trekking guide rather than applying a summer route time to snow.

What views will you see?

The landscape changes quickly with elevation. Forest openings reveal the city grid and port; the upper platform expands the view across the Beagle Channel; Del Filo adds a more open perspective toward Hoste and Navarino; and the high route turns attention back toward the Martial cirque and glacier.

Morning and afternoon light vary by season, and clouds can hide the glacier while the channel remains visible. If photography is the priority, choose a flexible day and check both wind and cloud base—not only rain probability.

Guided tour, independent taxi visit or full hike?

  • Choose the panoramic tour for a low-effort half day, organized transport and chairlift access when confirmed.
  • Choose an independent base visit if you have a flexible taxi plan and only want the platform or short forest walk.
  • Choose Del Filo if you are an experienced walker prioritizing views in stable snow-free conditions.
  • Choose a guided high route if you want the glacier viewpoint and conditions, season or experience make route judgment important.

Do not assume that free time during a panoramic tour includes guided supervision on higher trails. Confirm the boundaries of the service before leaving the group.

What to bring

  • Waterproof hiking shoes or boots with grip
  • Windproof and waterproof shell
  • Warm layer, hat and gloves
  • Water and snacks for the chosen duration
  • Trekking poles for the high route
  • Offline route information and a charged phone
  • Sun protection and sunglasses

The general Ushuaia hiking clothing guide provides a fuller layering checklist.

My professional view: Martial’s best feature is not that it is close to town; it is that you can choose exactly how much mountain you want. I would recommend the upper platform or Del Filo to most visitors and reserve the high glacier-viewpoint route for fit hikers with a clear forecast and enough time.

Final recommendation

For an easy scenic half day, book the panoramic chairlift experience and confirm same-day operation. For an independent hike, use the upper platform as the first decision point: turn toward Del Filo for a moderate panorama, or continue toward the glacier viewpoint only if fitness, visibility, footing and daylight all support the high route.

Tell VisitUshuaia your date, hiking experience and whether you want a chairlift visit or a genuine mountain hike. The team can confirm the suitable format and help you plan a Martial experience without confusing the scenic area with the full trail.
