Estancia Túnel Coastal Trail: Hiking Along the Beagle Channel

estancia tunel coastal trail

Table of Contents

The official Estancia Túnel trail is a low-difficulty, signposted 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) round trip taking about 2 hours 30 minutes. It starts at the Escarpados beacon at the end of the coastal gravel road in Playa Larga Natural and Cultural Reserve, about 12 kilometers east of Ushuaia. The route crosses winding Fuegian forest, open shoreline and a stream before reaching the ruins of the historic estancia beside the Beagle Channel.

Estancia Túnel offers something different from Ushuaia’s glacier and summit treks. Instead of committing to a long ascent, hikers follow the northern shore of the Beagle Channel through lenga, guindo, canelo and notro vegetation. The sea appears between the trees, then opens across grass and shoreline before the old ranch-and-sawmill site comes into view.

The trail name can also create confusion. This guide covers the standard official out-and-back route to Estancia Túnel. It does not cover the much longer continuation toward Río Encajonado or informal coastal itineraries with different distances. Turn around at the estancia unless a qualified guide has planned a separate extension.

Estancia Túnel trail facts

  • Distance: 5 km / 3.1 miles round trip
  • Official duration: 2 hours 30 minutes
  • Difficulty: low
  • Route type: out and back
  • Trail: signposted
  • Trailhead: Escarpados beacon, end of the Playa Larga coastal gravel road
  • Distance from Ushuaia: approximately 12 km east of the city
  • Phone coverage: partial
  • Emergency number shown locally: 103

The low rating reflects the modest distance and gentle overall profile. It does not mean a paved walk. Roots, wet soil, small slopes and a stream crossing require real hiking shoes, especially after rain or in colder months.

How to reach the trailhead

Drive east from Ushuaia toward Playa Larga Natural and Cultural Reserve, then continue along the gravel road that follows the coast. The official access is at the road’s end beside the beacon called Escarpados. Road and parking conditions can change, so confirm local access before leaving the city.

If you do not have a car, prearrange a taxi, private transfer or guided service in both directions. Do not depend on finding a vehicle at the trailhead after the hike. Give the driver the precise “Baliza Escarpados / Estancia Túnel trailhead” wording rather than only “Playa Larga,” which covers a broader coastal reserve.

Route description, section by section

1. Escarpados beacon and forest path

The first stretch enters a winding Fuegian forest. The path is well marked and has no major technical obstacle, but exposed roots and damp ground can be slippery. Allow the forest pace to settle before looking for the first open coast views.

2. Open field and Beagle Channel panorama

After roughly one kilometer, the trail reaches an open area suitable for a short pause. The view expands across the Beagle Channel toward the Chilean side of the water. Wind can be noticeably stronger here than under the trees, so keep a shell layer accessible.

3. Stream and shoreline

The marked route crosses a stream and follows part of the coastline. Use the established crossing rather than creating a new line through vegetation. Rain, snowmelt or ice can make this short feature more awkward than the distance suggests.

4. Gentle descent to Estancia Túnel

A final gentle slope leads to the remains of Estancia Túnel. The site once combined cattle activity with a sawmill that operated from 1917 until its closure. Today the structures are historical ruins, not a working ranch attraction with food, guides or indoor visitor services.

5. Return by the same route

Retrace the signed trail to Escarpados. The returning perspective places Ushuaia’s mountain backdrop ahead of you and can feel very different from the outward walk. Keep enough time for photographs without missing the arranged pickup.

Respect the ruins: do not climb unstable structures, remove material or treat the site as a shelter. The reserve protects natural, historical and archaeological values. Leave everything where it is and carry out all waste.

What views will you see?

The trail alternates rather than delivering one continuous panorama. Forest windows reveal the Beagle Channel, the open field creates the broadest mid-route view, and the shoreline brings hikers close to the coastal ecosystem. Across clear water and weather, Isla Navarino and Chilean mountain forms may be visible. Looking west on the return, the mountains behind Ushuaia frame the coast.

A boat offers the reverse perspective. VisitUshuaia’s Beagle Channel navigation passes views of Estancia Túnel and Playa Larga from the water while also visiting wildlife islands and Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse.

How difficult is Estancia Túnel?

In dry summer conditions, active beginners can usually manage the official 5-kilometer route. The main challenges are slippery roots, mud, the stream crossing and fast-changing coastal weather. It can work for hiking families whose children already walk uneven trails, but the route is not stroller-friendly and adults must supervise near water, roots and ruins.

Winter snow or ice can turn a low-rated path into a more serious outing. If traction, route visibility or daylight is uncertain, use a local guide or choose another activity.

General cold-season considerations are covered in our winter trekking guide.

Best time to hike

Late spring through early autumn provides the easiest combination of daylight and visible trail. Summer still brings wind, rain and cold air. Early morning can be quieter, while later light can be attractive over the channel; choose timing around transport and weather rather than photography alone.

Autumn color can enrich the forest, but shorter daylight and wet leaves slow the trail. In winter, verify road access, snow, ice and the need for traction on the same day.

What to wear and carry

  • Waterproof hiking shoes or boots with good grip
  • Waterproof and windproof jacket
  • Warm mid-layer, hat and light gloves
  • Water and a snack; do not expect services at the estancia
  • Offline route information and a charged phone
  • Small first-aid kit and personal medication
  • Trekking poles if wet roots or balance are a concern
  • Sun protection for the open shoreline

For a broader packing explanation, see what to wear and pack for Ushuaia. Keep one dry layer inside the backpack even when the forecast looks calm.

Independent or guided?

The official standard trail is marked and can be a reasonable independent hike for prepared visitors in good conditions. A guided option becomes valuable when you need transport, want natural and historical interpretation, are visiting in winter or intend to continue beyond Estancia Túnel. Make sure any extension is named explicitly and not hidden behind the same short-trail description.

For an independent plan, tell someone your trailhead, turnaround and return time. Partial phone coverage is not guaranteed communication. Turn back if the stream, ice, weather or fading daylight exceeds the group’s ability.

My professional view: Estancia Túnel is the coastal hike I recommend when travelers want a genuine trail without spending their entire day on a mountain. Its appeal is the sequence—forest, open channel, shoreline and history—not a single dramatic summit, so leave time to observe the landscape rather than racing the 5 kilometers.

Is the Estancia Túnel trail worth it?

Yes, especially for visitors who want a quieter half-day hike, Beagle Channel views and local history without the elevation of Laguna Turquesa or Cerro Guanaco. It is less suitable as a spontaneous walk without return transport or as an excuse to continue onto an unplanned remote route.

Send VisitUshuaia your date, group age, transport needs and preferred difficulty. We can help arrange a coastal hiking plan or combine the land perspective with a Beagle Channel boat navigation on a separate half day.
