Trekking Adventures in Ushuaia: Discover the Magic of Laguna Esmeralda

Ushuaia, famously recognized as the world’s southernmost city, is a paradise for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts. Surrounded by dramatic scenery, it provides an array of thrilling trekking opportunities. One of the most rewarding hikes in the region is the route to Laguna Esmeralda, a true gem in Tierra del Fuego’s rugged wilderness.

Tucked away in the heart of Ushuaia’s remote landscapes, Laguna Esmeralda captivates visitors with its vibrant green waters—hence its name. Encircled by dense forests, towering peaks, and ancient glaciers, the lagoon is a striking destination for those seeking a deep connection with nature. Though it’s a highlight for many travelers, getting there involves a moderate trek of about two hours, which can be quite chilly depending on the season—so proper gear is a must.

Ushuaia: trekking, trekking and trekking

The trail begins in the Tierra Mayor Valley, near Bonete Hill in the Sierra Alvear mountain range. The starting point is roughly 20 kilometers from downtown Ushuaia, along National Route 3. To begin your hike, drive north on Route 3 until you reach a spot about 100 meters before the entrance to Valle de Lobos. Look for a small clearing with space to park your car—there, a modest sign marked “Lag Esmeralda” indicates the beginning of the trail.

This hike is a perfect way to experience the unspoiled beauty of southern Patagonia and is ideal for adventurers in search of scenic trails and unique natural wonders.
