Puerto Williams: Location and Overview

Puerto Williams is a small, charming city located on Navarino Island, in the southernmost part of the Chilean region of Tierra del Fuego. It lies on the northern coast of the island, facing the Beagle Channel, with Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego island to the north and the open waters of the Southern Ocean to the south. It is part of the Cabo de Hornos Commune in the Chilean region of Magallanes y de la Antártica Chilena.

Although Ushuaia, Argentina, is more famous internationally, Puerto Williams holds the official title of the world’s southernmost city — located roughly 54° 56′ S, slightly farther south than Ushuaia. Its remoteness and pristine surroundings make it a true frontier town at the edge of the world.

Population and Character of Puerto Williams

With around 3,000 inhabitants, Puerto Williams is a tight-knit community. Its residents include Chilean navy personnel (due to the city’s strategic location), civil servants, fishermen, and members of the Yaghan (Yámana) Indigenous community, descendants of the original inhabitants of the area. The atmosphere is calm, safe, and markedly less touristic than Ushuaia, offering a more authentic southern experience.

A bit of history and cultural background

Puerto Williams was founded in 1953 as a naval base, initially named Puerto Luisa, and later renamed in honor of John Williams Wilson, a British-Chilean naval officer. Historically, the area was inhabited by the Yaghan people, renowned for their navigation skills and adaptation to the harsh subantarctic climate.

Today, the Martín Gusinde Anthropological Museum showcases Yaghan culture, early European exploration, and natural history, offering visitors valuable insight into the human story of this extreme region.
