1982 War Sites in Islas Malvinas (Falklands): what to see
The conflict between the United Kingdom and Argentina in 1982 draws great interest from visitors to the Falkland Islands. Memorials are scattered across the territory, and several small museums display relics and equipment from both British and Argentine forces.
San Carlos
At San Carlos, the British military cemetery offers a moving view across San Carlos Water, the place where British troops came ashore and heavy fighting took place before the renowned march (“yomp”) across East Falkland toward Stanley, the capital.
Nowadays, the setting is remarkably calm, with a small fence surrounding the graves of the few British servicemen laid to rest on the Islands. From Sussex Mountain, on the way to San Carlos, the panorama is considered one of the finest in the Falklands, providing a sweeping outlook of the entire area. With permission from the landowner, explorers can climb to the top to see old lookout shelters.
Walking routes designed for Port Sussex include this area, and lodging is available both in Port Sussex and San Carlos. Day excursions are easily arranged from Stanley or Mount Pleasant.

Goose Green and Darwin
The Goose Green and Darwin region contains numerous historically important spots, with tributes to British losses placed in various locations. Above Darwin settlement stands the memorial marking the site where Colonel H. Jones was killed.
Nearby lies the Argentine cemetery, overlooking Darwin, featuring a commemorative wall and rows of simple white crosses, many adorned with rosaries and flowers.
During the war, 114 local islanders were confined by Argentine forces inside the community hall at Goose Green, a building still recognizable by its distinctive tower.
A small museum in Goose Green provides detailed accounts of the 1982 conflict alongside other exhibits of local history. Although usually locked, the key can generally be obtained from the Goose Green Galley Café.
Self-guided trails connect several memorials in this area. Both Stanley and Mount Pleasant offer convenient day trips here, and visitor accommodations are available for longer stays.

Stanley
Around Stanley, hilltop memorials recall the final battles leading to the Argentine surrender. Walking paths are established for each hill, and a “pilgrimage trail” can be adapted to link multiple battle locations. Guided tours—both walking and by vehicle—can be arranged to focus on specific points of interest.
At Surf Bay stands the HMS Glamorgan memorial, while the Atlantic Conveyor is remembered near Cape Pembroke Lighthouse. Memorial Wood and the Liberation Monument on Ross Road honor the 255 British servicemen who died during the war.
Fitzroy
The settlement of Fitzroy, on East Falkland, is home to monuments for the Welsh Guards and sailors who perished when the Sir Galahad and Sir Tristram were destroyed. These memorials overlook the waters where the tragedies occurred. An additional plaque in the settlement highlights the connection with Wales, proudly represented by its national flag.
Lodging can be found in the settlement, and Fitzroy makes for an easy day excursion from both Stanley and Mount Pleasant. Self-guided routes include the main memorials and other points of interest.
Across the Islands
Other commemorative places can be found throughout the archipelago. HMS Sheffield is remembered on Sea Lion Island. Pebble Island, briefly seized by Argentine forces and later retaken in a daring SAS raid, has monuments including one for HMS Coventry.
At Port Howard, the local museum holds military artifacts, and the remains of crashed aircraft can be visited nearby.
