Walking & Hiking in the Islas Malvinas

The Falkland Islands can surely be regarded as one of the finest destinations in the world for walking. With such a minimal human presence, it is uncommon to encounter others outside Stanley. This is the heart of the hiking experience: choosing your own pace and company, then enjoying an intimate connection with wilderness and wildlife.

Amazing outdoors activities

With an atmosphere free from pollution, the panoramas on a bright, clear day are simply breathtaking, and the fresh, crisp air is invigorating. All of this comes accompanied by natural soundscapes—birds singing, waves washing against the shore, the rush of wind in the hills, or the peaceful stillness of silence.

Self-guided routes are being developed—download a set of Walking Guides, check at the Jetty Visitor Centre, or ask your lodging host about what’s available. Independent walkers must be responsible, respect the natural environment, and be confident in navigating their way. But this, too, is part of the Falklands’ adventure—the sense that you might be tracing a sheep path, stumbling upon a hidden cove, spotting wildlife, or even finding a rare plant where few humans have ever set foot.

Coastal views from the lighthouse

Around Stanley, there are numerous chances to wander into the nearby hills and discover stunning beaches. Cape Pembroke is a charming area, dotted with ponds, sheltered bays, and an attractive lighthouse. You can take a taxi to the starting point or set off directly from your accommodation, combining the town’s heritage with your walk.

On East Falkland, West Falkland, and the smaller islands, hosts are always ready with ideas for outings—from short scenic rambles to demanding treks—highlighting special viewpoints and wildlife-rich areas. Many offer sketch maps or simple leaflets for guidance where marked trails do not yet exist.

Geocaching

Enthusiastic geocachers will find plenty to keep themselves occupied while seeking out hidden caches across the archipelago. A local community can provide tips if needed.

Staying safe

For your safety, always let someone know where you are heading, bring sufficient water and snacks, wear sturdy hiking boots, and dress in layers to adapt to changing weather.
