Adventure in Islas Malvinas
From trail running to wilderness hikes, scuba diving to sea kayaking, the Falkland Islands offer countless opportunities to entice energetic and thrill-seeking visitors.
A Journey Across the Islands
The adventure often begins with travel between the islands. Islander aircraft ferry both residents and travellers to grass or all-weather runways in remote farms and villages on West Falkland and the outlying inhabited isles. Every seat comes with a window view, ensuring unforgettable sights of the landscapes and seascapes below.
On arrival, expect a warm welcome from your hosts and often a transfer in a 4×4 vehicle. This is the essential way to cross the wide open terrain—another adventure on its own—whether you are reaching your accommodation or setting off on excursions to isolated corners of the islands.
Landscapes – gleaming whites and muted greys
Sweeping white beaches, tussac and white-grass plains, rugged headlands, and wind-sculpted ridges form a dramatic backdrop for land-based exploration.
Several self-guided paths have been created in different areas, particularly around Stanley where hills and coastlines are accessible. You may hike, jog, or simply roam at your own pace—or turn to local guides for their in-depth knowledge. Running competitions are occasionally hosted, and details can be found in the events programme. Geocaching is also a favourite pastime, with many hidden caches close to Stanley and others placed in distant sites (always request the landowner’s permission before searching in private areas).
Mountain biking is slowly carving out a following. The brisk winds make for demanding rides, yet the exhilaration and sense of accomplishment are worth the challenge.
Climbing offers striking panoramas, especially when accompanied by an experienced local guide. The untouched rock formations are largely sandstone and quartz.

Seascapes – vivid blues and emerald tones
The shallow coastal waters represent the Islands’ most biologically rich habitat, with new marine species often discovered by divers. Over a hundred shipwrecks rest offshore, while playful seals and other marine mammals are frequent companions underwater.
At the surface, water sports here are praised as “adventures in breathtaking settings.” With scarcely another soul around, sea kayaking is a superb way to explore untouched shores. When winds are favourable, surfing, windsurfing, and dinghy sailing are also possible. Seabirds glide overhead while dolphins or sea lions may join you in the water.
Growing Opportunities
Those passionate about active outdoor pursuits can reach out to the Falkland Islands Tourist Board, which connects adventurers with local experts and companies offering guided outings, gear rental, and marine knowledge.
These experiences are still evolving—making now the perfect moment to be among the first to enjoy the raw and remarkable environment of the Falklands.
