OUR RECOMMENDATION

IS THE DOG SLEDDING WORTH IT?

Absolutely! I recommend this experience if you’re visiting Ushuaia in winter and want to do something more active than simply enjoying the snowy landscapes from a vehicle. What I particularly like about this tour is that dog sledding is only one part of the experience: you travel into the beautiful Tierra Mayor Valley, ride through the snow with Siberian Huskies, walk through the lenga forest and continue on snowshoes toward the Hélo Waterfall and a panoramic viewpoint.

For me, it’s a very good way to experience the real winter atmosphere of Tierra del Fuego in just a few hours. The combination of dogs, forest, snowshoeing and mountain scenery makes it much more complete than a simple dog-sled ride. I would especially recommend it to couples, families with children over four, and active travelers looking for a memorable outdoor experience during their stay in Ushuaia.

One thing I would keep in mind is that this is an active winter excursion, rather than a sightseeing tour. You should be comfortable walking in the snow and spending several hours outdoors. If that sounds like your kind of experience, I think it is one of the most enjoyable ways to discover the snowy valleys outside Ushuaia.

ITINERARY

The amazing Dog Sledding in Ushuaia

This winter adventure begins with a hotel pickup in Ushuaia, followed by a scenic transfer to Tierra Mayor Valley, one of the most beautiful winter areas outside the city. Surrounded by snow-covered mountains, forests and wide open valleys, this area offers an ideal setting to experience the landscapes of Tierra del Fuego during the winter season.

Upon arrival, you’ll embark on an exhilarating dog sled ride across the snow-blanketed valley, led by a team of Siberian Huskies. This traditional form of winter transportation provides a fun and memorable introduction to the Fuegian wilderness while allowing you to enjoy the silence and spectacular scenery of the valley from a completely different perspective.

After the sled ride, the adventure continues on foot. We’ll hike along forest trails surrounded by native lenga trees, experiencing the peaceful atmosphere of the sub-Antarctic forest in winter, until we reach the Hachero shelter.

There, you’ll put on snowshoes and begin a 1.5-hour trek through the snowy landscape toward the Hélo Waterfall, located in the Alvear area. Snowshoeing makes it possible to explore areas that would otherwise be difficult to access when the trails are covered in deep snow. Along the way, your guide will help you navigate the terrain while you enjoy impressive views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The route eventually reaches the frozen or partially frozen Hélo Waterfall, depending on the weather conditions, as well as a panoramic viewpoint overlooking Tierra Mayor Valley. This is one of the highlights of the excursion and an excellent opportunity to stop, take photographs and appreciate the scale of the winter landscape.

The return journey to the shelter is easier and faster, as much of the trail follows a downhill route. Once back, you’ll be welcomed with a comforting hot chocolate, the perfect way to warm up after the outdoor activities and enjoy a well-deserved rest in the shelter.

Final program and return to the hotels

Afterwards, we’ll make our way back through the winter landscape to Tierra Mayor Valley, where our vehicle will be waiting for the transfer back to your hotel in Ushuaia.

Combining dog sledding, hiking, snowshoeing, native forests, mountain scenery and a winter waterfall, this excursion is an excellent choice for travelers who want to go beyond conventional sightseeing and experience the adventurous side of winter in Tierra del Fuego.
